The name derives from the Jaffa orange. The sweet is part of Australian and New Zealand cultural folklore.

An institution as far as lollies go in NZ for eating during movies, throwing, or rolling under the theater seats many of which were wooden, and the Jaffas would roll down making lots of noise. (Jaffas are delicious, just like Snifters used to be – before these also were discontinued by the manufacture)
