How To Use
How To Use Essano Scalp Refresh Shampoo
Massage into wet hair and scalp, leave for 1-2 mins, then rinse. Repeat if hair is extra oily or has product build up. Follow with essano™ Scalp Refresh Conditioner.
A few of us in my household have a need for anti-dandruff shampoo, so were keen to try it. The smell is a lot nicer than other types of anti-dandruff shampoos that we’ve used (a lot less of an obvious chemical smell). Didn’t have the lather you expect from a shampoo though, so it felt like you needed quite a lot more product to get through to your scalp. Hair felt “squeaky clean” which probably isn’t a great feeling, as it wasn’t particularly moisturising, however we followed with the Essano Scalp refresh conditioner which bought things back a bit.
+ PROS: Pleasant smell
Less flaking on scalp
- CONS:A lot of product is needed for desired effect
Hair felt dried out

I feel as though I can only comment on the Shampoo whilst apply it. As I haven’t used it in its own but rather as a duo alongside the Conditioner .
On first inspection I love that the Shampoo is a pump bottle whereas the Conditioner is a click top. It allows for easier recognition of which is which.
The Shampoo has a manly smell to it – I wouldn’t recognise it as mint.
The Shampoo doesn’t lather up like most so I had to use two pumps to adequately coat my hair.
My hair is dandruff prone but also oily – being Oily I had to shampoo twice.
Using this duo I found the dandruff to be almost eliminated and my hair feeling less oily – so that’s a win!
+ PROS: - Works well alongside Conditioner.
- Seamless packaging design.
- 96.2% of the total ingredients are of natural origin.
- Recyclable packaging.
- CONS:- Doesn’t lather.
- Requires double the amount of product when applying.
- Price a little high in regards to amount needed.
Great New Zealand made product with a lot of natural ingredients! For starters the packaging is just gorgeous. Looking at the retail price it pays to shop around… my local supermaket is $6 cheaper than a competitor.
The smell of the product was pretty good compared to other dandruff products – thats a big bonus!
As someone who suffered from bad dandruff and was constantly scratching I highly recommend this product. I have had dramatic results when using this with the matching conditioner. My shoulders no longer look like I have been out in the snow and I have completely stopped scratching!
I followed the directions on bottle and found you really need very wet hair to get the product to lather – initially I used a few pumps but i have very thick heavy hair. I left it 2mins, rinsed and repeated. It does leave your hair feeling very dry but when followed up with the conditioner as directed and dried with a hair dryer my hair feels like ive stepped out of the hairdresser.
+ PROS: -Smells ok
-Beautiful packaging
-Product does what it says it does
-When used with matching conditioner hair feels amazing
- CONS:-If matching conditioner not used final results aren't as good as they could be.
I gifted this to my daughter for her dandruff control as she needs it, and it definitely worked! Dandruff was reduced and barely noticeable after just one use. Going forward she will probably alternate between using this and a normal shampoo as it works really well so I don’t feel like you would need to use it more than once during a week. Had a different feel from normal shampoo as it didn’t froth up as much, which is fine.
+ PROS: Works well
Attractive presentation
Nice smell
- CONS:You could use heaps if you were aiming to lather up your hair. High levels of lather/foam/froth aren't necessary but I feel an inexperienced user wouldn't realise this.
In using this shampoo, I find it not foaming much which makes me pump some more shampoo though it smells nice. I also feel it was not harsh on my hair and leaves it healthy. I notice that my dandruff also lessen and it does not itch that much.
+ PROS: Gentle on hair
smells great
reduce dandruff
- CONS:Didn't lather much, need to use a lot

We always have anti dandruff shampoo in the house and have learnt from experience that some are better than others. The Essano scalp refresh shampoo did no reduce itch or dandruff for any of my family. The smell is pleasant and the pump bottle is good for portion control with kids but hard to get the bottom of the bottle out.
+ PROS: NZ made
Bottle is made from recycled material
- CONS:Does not do what it says on the pack (reduce itch/dandruff)
I really likes the smell of this, i have a family of 6. Due to the size of our family, this product doesn’t go very far and you need to use a little more than most Shampoos. My kids asked why it doesn’t lather like most shampoos but each family member said it made their hair feel amazing. After a week we noticed a difference in the dryness of our hair. My daughter has stopped scratching her head as much as she did and shes loving this product. Even more so followed by the counter partner conditioner.
+ PROS: Smells amazing
Actually works to reduce the itchiness and dandruff
- CONS:Costs twice the amount most shampoos cost
Didn't lather up like most shampoos
had to use more than normal
My daughter has very thick long hair and is prone to dandruff, this worked really well on her scalp and has definitely reduced her dandruff, the only problem is we needed to use a lot of the shampoo to penetrate through her thick hair. The shampoo doesn’t produce a luxurious lather like others so it doesn’t go far if you have abundant hair.
+ PROS: Smells really nice.
Leaves hair shiney, and scalp feeling clean and not itchy.
Has reduced dandruff well.
- CONS:Need to use a lot more than expected so may not last long.
Price is high for the amount you need to use.
A little more pricey than the conditioner counterpart, but overall was very happy with this product. The pump doesn’t dispense much at each pump, so felt like was using a lot.
+ PROS: Smell
No itchiness
No residue
- CONS:Felt like was pumping a lot of product.
Limited lather
I was not too happy with this shampoo as it was extra drying on my hair and it took a few washes the following week with my normal shampoo and conditioner to bring it back to good. It did definitely help with my dry itchy scalp but at the expense of my hair so unfortunalty it won’t be something I will purchase again
+ PROS: Smells nice
- CONS:Very drying

This isn’t a shampoo I would seek out as the bottle describes it as more of a daily shampoo and mainly aimed at reducing dandruff. Neither of which I aim to do myself. However, it was a nice consistency and perfectly fine to use.
Wish I could give this product more than 3 stars. Its quite expensive for a shampoo that I needed to use alot of. Usually I only need a table spoon of product to lather in my hair, this product I needed over 15 pumps to cover my scalp and onto my ends. It didn’t give me the feeling of clean unfortunately.
+ PROS: Smelt nice
- CONS:Needed to use alot
Didnt feel clean
Didn't lather or foam up hair
Too expensive for not overly working
