While we often use the humble aluminium foil for baking, you’ll be surprised to find that this hardworking kitchen tool can be used for so much more! Ahead, we list 10 new and unique uses for tin foil you’ll wish you knew sooner.
1. Prevent greasy drains
When draining meat, use an aluminium foil to line a bowl and catch the grease. When the grease hardens, toss the foil in the trash.
2. Sharpen dull scissors
Save your old scissors with this nifty tin foil hack! Simply take a piece of aluminium foil, about 8 inches or longer depending on your scissors, and fold it lengthwise multiple times until you have a thick strip of foil. The added layers will help sharpen the blade with every cut of the tinfoil.
3. DIY oven cleaner
Say goodbye to messy drips on the bottom of the oven by laying a sheet or two of tin foil on the rack below. Do NOT line the bottom of the oven with foil as it could cause a fire. Simple take another rack and cover it with the foil.
4. No more paint-splattered doorknobs
Got a DIY home reno lined up? Cover your doorknobs with tin foil to protect it from paint stains.
5. Speed up your ironing
Zoom through ironing your clothes by putting a piece of tin foil under your ironing board cover. The foil will reflect the heat through the clothing, smoothing out wrinkles more quickly. You’re welcome.
6. Clean your BBQ grill
File this for your next BBQ: according to Readers Digest, placing a sheet of tin foil over the grill right after you finish cooking the last batch of meat can help burn off any remaining bbq residue.
Simply let the grill run for a few minutes until the grates get hot and the residue loosens up. Remove the foil sheets then scrub the grates with the crumpled tin foil.
7. Eliminate dryer static
If you’re looking for a natural and cost-free way to get rid of stubborn dryer static (you know the one that makes your clothes stick together?) simply throw in wadded-up balls of tin foil on your next load of clothes in the dryer.
8. DIY light reflector
Get the perfect selfie with this DIY reflector made from none other than tin foil ofcourse! Simply cover a piece of cardboard with aluminium foil with the shiny side facing outwards to create your own.
To use, position the “reflector” to bounce off the light to your subject. This will result in a more even lighting in your photograph.
9. Homemade jewelry cleaner
To restore the glory of your old jewellery, simply line a bowl with foil and add in salt, baking soda and dish detergent. Pour in hot water and drop your jewellery in, letting it sit for 5 minutes. Rinse well and air dry.
For hard to remove tarnish, gently scrub with a toothbrush.
10. Bake the perfect pie crust
Home cooks everywhere swear by using tin foil when baking. Especially when keeping the edges of your homemade pie from burning!
Cover the edges of your pie with strips of foil to prevent them from getting overdone while the rest of your pie cooks.
Yes. I use that too. I am surprised the way I use tinfoil iis not included here. A favourite of my late mother. To clean your silver (epns) cutlery crumple aluminium foil and use boiling water and dissolve salt in a glass jar and soak. They come out brilliantly shiny. Rinse and dry.
