The best part? You don’t have to be a makeup artist to create long, voluminous lashes that wow every time! Check out our top tips on how to master the art of applying your mascara below.
Step 1: Curl your lashes
Before applying your mascara, make sure to use a lash curler to lift and lengthen your natural lashes. This step will also help the product adhere to your lashes when you apply them.
Simply place the lash curler at the base of your upper lashes, close the curler and hold for a few seconds.
Tip: For curly lashes that last all night, curl your lashes before and after applying your mascara. This is the most effective way to keep them looking long and fluttery all night.
Step 2: Getting the product
When picking up product using the mascara wand, make sure to swirl it around the tube to coat the bristles. Do not pump the wand as this pushes air inside the tube, making your mascara clumpy and causing it to dry out faster.
Tip: When twisting the wand out of the tube, wipe off any excess with a paper towel before applying to avoid clumpy, heavy lashes.
Step 3: Application time!
Now for the fun part: putting on your mascara!
Starting at the root of your lashes, apply the mascara using a wriggling motion. This helps prevent lashes from being weighed down by the product as most of it is concentrated on the base.
Using an upward motion, gently coat your lashes all the way to the tip. Move slowly to avoid any clumps from forming.
Repeat this process until you get the look that you want.
For your bottom lashes, make sure to remove any excess product on the wand to avoid clumps. Since our lashes are generally more delicate, you want to apply the product just at the roots, wiggling it back and forth for a nice, even coat.
Tip: Make sure to apply each coat of mascara before the product dries (this can cause your lashes to be brittle and weak).
Step 4: Brush out
Using a disposable spoolie brush, comb out your lashes to separate them and get rid of any clumping. This step also enhances the fluttery, doe-eyed look we oh-so-love!
Step 5: Clean up any smudges
While it’s tempting to instantly try and rub off smudged mascara during the application, our advice is to leave it to the end. Doing this allows the product to dry on the skin, making it easy to buff away with a cotton swab or even a clean spoolie brush.
