How To Get Rid of Fleas: 5 Practical Tips

Get rid of the pesky buggers with our five fool-proof and practical tips!

Contrary to popular belief, fleas do not hibernate in winter. While the temperature drop helps slow their development down, the warmth in our homes during the chilly months can become the perfect breeding ground for these pesky buggers.

In fact, according to a survey conducted in Australia, 65 percent of untreated cats and 47 percent of untreated dogs have signs of fleas during the winter period. This is why it’s important that we make flea-control a year-round priority to help protect our family and pets from the harmful effects of these dreaded pests.

Ahead, we list 5 ways you can prevent a flea infestation in your home (minus the hefty bill!)

  1. Vacuum! Vacuum! Vacuum!

It’s no secret that fleas love burrowing into our carpets, cushions and behind furniture. Thoroughly vacuuming these areas in our homes regularly can help remove the source of new fleas.

  1. Use food-grade flea powder

To help eliminate fleas completely, grab yourself a food grade flea powder on your next grocery run! Simply dust the powder of your choice over the carpets, under the beds and the rest of your furniture.

You can use a brush or a broom to sweep it everywhere, making sure you don’t vacuum these areas once applied. Let the powder rest on the surface for three to four days. Avoid sleeping in the treated rooms and if you have pets in the house make sure you relocate them to a safe area during the course of the treatment.

Pro tip: the following day after applying the flea powder, vacuum the house as you normally do to prevent the fleas from breeding again.

  1. Bathe all your pets using flea shampoo

Using a vet-approved flea shampoo is one of the most practical ways to prevent fleas from invading your home. When bathing your pets, let the shampoo sit on its coat for atleast 10 minutes, letting the product really work its magic.

  1. Mow the grass

Fleas love hiding in the grass, so if your pet spends time outdoors you need to trim it short. This step is necessary as it prevents fleas from multiplying.

  1. Declutter

If you’re looking for an excuse to rearrange your space, then this is it! Decluttering the lawn, patio and indoor areas is a surefire way to prevent fleas from hiding into old toys, wood chips, etc.
