6 Wine Hacks You Need to Know
To commemorate World Wine and Cheese Day, we’ve gathered six wine hacks to keep in your back pocket for this special occasion and beyond!
How to chill wine quickly
Our friends over at Handee Paper Towels shared this fool-proof way to chill your wine in faster than you can say “Wine and Cheese Day!”. Check out the video below to find out how!
Frozen Wine Cubes
Stuck with some leftover wine? We have you covered. This genius wine hack lets you freeze your leftover vino into ice cubes. Once frozen, pop them into a glass of sparkling water for a refreshing wine spritzer. You can also use the ice cubes to add to recipes that call for a splash of wine.
Spill-Free Wine
This trick is a favourite among wine lovers and for good reason; it prevents your favourite bubbly from spilling over! For a mess-free glass of wine, pour at a 45-degree angle, then tilt the bottle upright when the glass is almost full.
No Corkscrew? No Problem
The experts at Wine Selectors shared the following age-old methods below for times when you don’t have a corkscrew with you. You’re welcome.
SET OF KEYS
Someone around has to have a set of keys, right? Insert a key into the cork at an angle and twisting it clockwise around the bottle. When you’ve completely gone around the bottle, pull out the key to remove the cork.
THE SHOE TRICK
Simply take off a shoe and place the base of the bottle in the foot hole, then pound the shoe against a stone wall or tree. It will take quite a few taps, but eventually, the cork will pop out bit-by-bit. Once it’s out enough to grab, pull it out by hand. If you’re wearing thongs, don’t despair, this method also works with Australia’s preferred footwear.
PUSH IT IN
If all else fails, try pushing the cork in the bottle, rather than pulling it out. Place the end of a wooden spoon handle (it must be smaller than the neck of the bottle) on top of the cork and tap on it gently with a rubber mallet or a rolling pin until it drops into the bottle.
Frozen grapes as ice cubes
To prevent watered-down wine, use frozen grapes instead of ice cubes to keep your wine chilled. Once they thaw, you’ll be left with little wine morsels you’re sure to love.
Stretch a bottle of wine
Spoon University shared this genius money-saving hack to stretch your bottle of wine by making a pitcher of sangria. All you need is a little liquor, a bottle of wine and some sliced fruit of your choice. The best part? Sangria keeps well for a few days, so there’s no rush to finish it right away.
